CrabKing, Snow, and Dungeness crabs are the primary shellfish species Peter Pan Seafoods harvests from Alaska. Dungeness are found from California to the eastern Aleutian islands off Alaska. Only males with a minimum shell width of 6-1/4 inches are harvested commercially.
Snow crabs are one of only a few species caught in both the North Atlantic and North Pacific waters. These crabs can measure three feet from tip to tip and weigh up to five pounds. Snow crabs are generally marketed in sections or clusters. Each section consists of four legs and a claw. The sections are graded by weight from 5 to 8 ounces or 8 ounces and up.
The largest specie of crab is the King crab. King crabs can be found off the shores of Southeast Alaska and the Bering Sea. King crabs can grow as large as 6 feet from leg tip to leg tip and weigh over 10 pounds. Traditionally, King crabs is marketed in a single leg & claw pack graded by the number of legs per ten pounds. Typical counts would be 6/9 – 9/12 – 12/14 – 14/17 – 17/20 – etc and are generally sold in 20 lb cartons.
